Dear Colleagues,

I am very pleased to announce that Colorado State University’s College of Engineering has received a $53.3 million gift from alumnus Walter Scott, Jr., a 1953 graduate and longtime president and board chairman of Peter Kiewit Sons’ Inc. This is the largest private gift in Colorado State’s history. In recognition of his extraordinary generosity, the college will be officially named the Walter Scott, Jr. College of Engineering.

Mr. Scott’s support of our engineering programs over the years has been transformational, including his support of the Suzanne and Walter Scott, Jr. Bioengineering Building. This latest gift carries on that extraordinary legacy: It will expand a key scholarship program for outstanding undergraduate and graduate students; create a leadership program in the college; fund four new Presidential Chairs in water, health, energy, and the environment; support the development of infrastructure and laboratories to bolster education and research activities; and much more.

When Mr. Scott came to our campus as a student from Omaha, he was young, uncertain, and seeking the passion that would drive his life. He considered range management and planned on a career in ranching, but then a friend suggested he look at a degree in civil engineering. That choice changed his career path and eventually led him to one of his great life passions: investing through philanthropy in the promise and education of future generations. Students, you are the reason he is making this commitment – because he believes in your talent and potential and wants to ensure you have access to an exceptional education. And perhaps, one day, some among you will choose to do the same for generations yet to come.

As we head into Fall Break, this is yet another reason to be thankful for all those who make Colorado State University a great institution. You – our students, faculty, and staff – are at the top of that list, and I hope that all of you have the opportunity to enjoy a restful, restorative holiday before we return for the last push toward finals and commencement. Stay safe, take care of one another, and have a great break.

Best wishes,
-tony
